Northern Virginia Digital History Archive
The Northern Virginia Digital History Archive is a cool idea.
I came across pictures that appeared to be from the 70s and 80s, a few others that were taken by skilled photographers and a diverse collection from all over Northern Virginia.
I ended up creating two accounts in an attempt to upload pictures. At first it was a struggle. After failed efforts to upload pictures from my phone I switched to a laptop. From there I could see the camera pictures were .png files not .jpeg files. Figuring this may be the issue I converted them and then the pictures were easily uploaded. I never did get to see them, however, because after each upload I was kicked out. The message was I needed to verify my email but neither of my email accounts received and the email necessary for verification. It’s was frustrating because I really wanted to see the website from the inside.
Prince William County
Another local database “History not shared is history lost” for Prince William County and is run by Ron Turner. I LOVE THIS!! Immaculately kept. Clean and simple. The Images page is great as all the images are shown and clearly labeled without having to click here or there or go to multiple pages. The African American Records tab appears rather extensive and documents are all transcribed; it would be nice to see scans of the originals, lack of such is a weakness.
I could easily get lost in the other tabs as well. Published works includes items such as court and census records. Sites and Structures has 1000s of pages relating to places of historical significance in Prince William County.
This database is the perfect place for history nerds to get lost in. The site was last updated in February of 2018. No information is posted about the manager of this the database but his email is pwcvabooks@comcast.net and I’ve reached out to him to learn more.
PROJECT UPDATE
Well, not much here. The final exam was my worst experience using Proctor U which I have used close to 8-9 times over the past decade. This was literally my only negative experience but it was a doozy. One hiccup after another, after another, after another. From my election turning off the outlet our WiFi router was on to the proctors not understanding that other websites needed to be open for the exam, I was done with the test before it was done.
After that fiasco, I had to walk away from this class for a few days and consequently the webpage has been ignored. I’ve set it up but I’ve done no more than that.
