Local university with updates critical to history–what’s not to like? GMU is my alma mater and as an educator of social studies this blog is a must follow for me. Plus educators in general should keep close ties to local universities especial within their field of study.

2) Library of Congress Blog

Personal voices from the Library of Congress: compelling stories & fascinating facts.

The Mecca of all things America History is the Library of Congress.  Follow this blog! First posting in April 24th of 2007 with a blog on this significance and similarity between blogging and Samuel Morse his telegraph the blog has sine grown in depth and character.

1) Follow  Library of Congress Crowd on Twitter.

News and updates on By the People, virtual volunteering. Transcribe, review, and tag Library digital collections to improve discovery.

This is an absolutely fabulous opportunity to be a vital part of preserving history! The current crowd sourcing campaigns include reading and transcribing personal works of Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Clara Barton, Branch Rickey, Mary Church Terrell not to mention suffragist and civil war soldiers. How cool would it be to have your work in the digital archive of the nation’s library? This truly is “digital history”.

2) Follow The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History on Twitter.

The Institute is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 history education while also serving the general public. Its mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and resources.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute is a resource for primary source documents and lessons. They have professional development opportunities and grants available to educators.  Major bragging rights on Facebook are involved if a teacher receives and invitation to a Gilder Lehrman summer workshop.
